Morning Star Conservancy, in partnership with Thornscrub Sanctuary, is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking in-situ conservation project aimed at preserving and restoring the precious Tamaulipan Thornscrub habitat in South Texas. As Thornscrub Sanctuary’s fiscal sponsor, Morning Star Conservancy is proud to support our shared goals and intentions in acquiring land for perpetual conservation. Together, we have successfully begun the process of protecting 120 acres of undeveloped, intact habitat in South Texas.

The "Tamaulipan Thornscrub" is a distinct habitat type found in South Texas, home to dozens of plant and animal species that exist nowhere else in the United States. Despite its ecological richness, the region's scrubby and spiny plants are often dismissed as mere "brush" and considered disposable obstacles to economic progress. This misconception has led to the widespread destruction of this unique habitat for the sake of retail centers, parking lots, and tract housing developments.
A Call to Action
The Tamaulipan Thornscrub is a treasure trove of biological diversity, resilience, and beauty. It is a living testament to the wonders of nature, existing right in our backyard. Yet, too many people today remain unaware of its value. Our project seeks to change this narrative by demonstrating the importance of conservation and encouraging the community to join us in protecting this vital habitat.
We invite you to support our efforts to conserve and restore the Thornscrub habitat. Though we have secured contract for this project funding is still a needed. Together, we can ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to experience and cherish the remarkable ecosystem that too often goes unnoticed.
